A Framework That Provides Clarity

During periods of “low visibility,” confusion reigns: for every indication of one trend, there seems to be a countertrend. The key is to glean from the collective wisdom of reliable leading indicators a clear signal that the economy is headed for a turn.

Weekly Leading Index Rises

The U.S. economy is growing at a decent clip but is unlikely to experience a significant burst of activity in the near future, a report said on Friday.

The Economic Cycle Research Institute said its weekly leading index ticked up to 132.7 in the latest period ended Nov 19 from 132.6 in the prior week.

"The index is telling us that while there is no sharp downturn in growth ahead, hopes of a strong reacceleration are premature," said Lakshman Achuthan, ECRI Managing Director.

The measure's growth rate, which smoothes out weekly fluctuations, climbed to 0.1 percent -- a 16-week high -- from -0.8 percent.
